Besides, rearing of sheep/Goat, Duck and Poultry has good adaptive capacity (can tolerate high level temperature and salinity) and good potential in the project areas. This will be promoted because, it is low cost, return on investment is good and households can have multiple harvesting and hence better income. Perhaps the most profitable and adaptive IGA is short rotation carp culture. Households will be able to benefit both though sale and consumption. Some of the species can be tilapia (monosex mainly) and pangus, gulshe tengra, bata, vetki, parsa, etc. In fisheries, the project will encourage culture of salt water tolerant fishes either in pond and jointly with agricultural crops or in rivers in confinement. The targeted households will be encouraged to plant fruit trees (like sopheda, jam, etc) and fuel wood trees (rain tree, in their homesteads that can also provide income source and meet household’s fuel wood need.Īpart from introducing adaptive agriculture, the project will introduce programmes to promote fisheries and livestock that can survive in such extreme conditions. Furthermore, emphasis will be given on vegetable cultivation in homesteads so that families can meet their daily vitamin and mineral needs but can also sell the surplus in the market and have sustainable income. The proposed project will try to promote more adaptive agricultural crops that can survive in saline condition and give substantial yield. Climate change has been having adverse negative impacts on water supply, agriculture, fisheries, livestock and infrastructures in Shyamnagar area. The project plans to addresses these issues in the following ways:Ĭlimate change-induced disasters cannot be prevented, however, a number of interventions can be undertaken to mitigate its impacts so that loss due to such disasters are less. The core climate change threats, as apprehended in this proposed project, are climate change-induced disaster like high tidal, cyclone, tidal surge and salinity.
